The United States has been one of the biggest countries in the world, while it is a multiracial nation. According to the research by U.N, the total population is over 309 million and more than 40 kinds of races exist at present. In 19th century, it was believed by many people that White is the most evolved race in the world, and some people still believe it now. Racism in the United States can be divided into two groups; Native American who have lived for at least 20,000years, African American who have lived on America but their ancestor born in Africa. People who were discriminated fought for their own rights.
The first racism is about Native American. The government of the United States looked down on them as encumbrances and adopted the policy that they should eliminate Native Americans from the United States thoroughly. For examples, Thomas Jefferson recommended enclosing them into the reservation, and Andrew Jackson made a speech that Indian is an inferior tribe and it should be exterminated by White in the congress. But, in 1897, the Supreme Court in the United States judged that Indian Removal Act was illegal and put a sentence “Indians are also human” into the decision. According to a poll, 788 million Native Americans live in the United States.
The second racism is about African American. From 18th century, people came from England caught Africans by violence and exchanging money, and sold them to America for obtaining big fortune. Africans were considered to be mere workforce not human. It could amplify the discrimination against Africans. In 20th century, restrooms were divided into White and Black, furthermore in a bus; Black had to give up their seats for White just because they were Black. Thesedays, a number of black people play active roles in various fields. For example, Barack Obama who is the president of the United States now was supported by many white people and won a presidential election. It became very big step for America to approve status of Black people. But it was very difficult to change people’s consciousness that White was superior to Black.
In 20th century, there were a lot of people who fought for getting black’s rights in the United States. African American people who destroyed the state’s transport segregation policies were arrested and fined. On 1st December, 1955, Rosa Parks, a middle-aged tailor’s assistant from Montgomery, Alabama, who was tired after working, refused to give up her seat to a white man. After her arrest, Martin Luther King, a pastor at the local Baptist Church, helped organize protests against bus segregation. He was joined by other campaigners for civil rights, including Ralph David Abernathy, Edger Nixon and Bayard Rustin. The group was persuaded by Joann Robinson, of the Woman’s Political Council, that they should launch a bus boycott. The idea was that the black people in Montgomery should refuse to use the buses until passengers were completely integrated. King was arrested and his house was fire-bombed, but the protest continued. Martin Luther King made a speech at Washington in 1963. The speech is very famous by the beginning phrase of it, which is “I have a dream’. Many people would have heard the sentences, and they are “ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”. By those who people’s efforts, the world could change to better direction for Black.
In conclusion, there are two groups of racism in the United States. First is the racism against Native American. Second one is against African American. And a number of people made every possible effort to obtain the civil rights. Not only in the United States but also in the world, various discriminations exist. For instance, sexual, language and religious discrimination. People should face to the problem about discrimination as long as people who belong to different tribe or race live together in this world.
What do you think about this racial problemes?
