Dogs Help Children Become Better Readers

Dogs are very popular pet in United States ,and a special group of dogs are known as “Therapy Dogs.”Some therapy dogs work in schools and libraries. For example, In California, they have become children’s reading buddies. The dogs belong to a therapy dog group called PAWS for Healing. Eight of these special dogs have been trained to be listening companions for young readers. The dogs make a good audience. They don’t judge a child who cannot read well, they just listen calmly. The children can read at their own pace. They look forward to reading to the dogs, and the dogs love the attention. Therapy dogs play an important role in the education.

Usually, dogs make us relaxed and give selfless love. Even if children go to a library to meet the dogs, I think it’s good thing that meeting them will be a chance which the children start reading books. When the children who are stressed meet the dogs, they will feel so better than ever. Because they are just listening to his voice. The more they read to the dogs, the more they have self confidence. I think it is important that children read books without suffering from inferiority complex. So children should read at their own pace. Now, Japanese students hardly read books. Therapy dogs should work in Japan too. And the dogs will be good friends and also good listeners.

The Differences Between Japan and The U.S.

Japanese education is different from American one. In Japan, we attach greater importance to acquiring public morality, so keeping social order is also recognized as educational purpose. The content of Japanese education is criticized it places too much emphasis on knowledge. What is called “Education Stressing”. That’s why other countries take the view that we lack critical thinking power, creative power and communication or negotiating power. In Japanese education, including discipline, children are brought up freely and unhabitually in childhood, however the more they aged, the more instill rules to them. This trend is opposite of American education. On the other hand, Japanese education is epoch-making and tends to treat students as a group than as an individual. And that sometimes it is criticized that it lacks the function developing children’s critical thinking power. The biggest difference between them is that skipping a grade doesn’t exist in Japan. So the results of examinations are not important and your graduate school brand is much important.

In America, they have their own tradition of programmatic, and are keeping the tradition of Elite education originated from Europe. Basically, they’re said that they trend to respect independence of the individuals. You can negotiate about rules and so on in every ways, and when you try to enter the school , you will be examined closely from various points of views.

There are so many differences between Japan and American education. But they have an advantage and a disadvantage each other. In Japanese education, they took great importance to knowledge, so children must be busy with memorizing their textbooks. They become a grownup and face the international conference. Their lack will be clear! In American education, They have critical thinking power and communication or negotiating power but they lack knowledge. I think it is the most dangerous thing that people don’t know their own history, a war will happen because they don’t know the cruelty of wars.

I think we should develop our education with imitating each other’s advantages!

Unforgettable Day

When I was fifteen years old, I visited New Zealand on a school excursion.

I stayed at a farm. In here, I was taken care of my host family whose names are Shirley and Owen Pearce. I called them “papa” and “mom”. For only three days I stayed here, but our relation was so good. We have sent letters with each other until now.

One day I was sprawled out on the carpet with watching TV. Papa came to me and said “you are noisy girl!” he kicked my hip and was laughing.

I answered “I know. Yeah, I am noisy but cheerful! How nice!” We were laughing together.

Tuesday, he took me out to shopping. We visited a souvenir shop. It was so excited, and I bought many things. In those things, I bought a present for my host family. It is a photograph stand. I wanted them to put our photo into it.

Last day, I had to go back to Japan, I got ready to return and got into his car. That moment, mom shed tears and waved her hand as if she hurries me up. But her real feeling was sad, I want to think so.

When I get into a bus , I had to say “Good bye.” I cried again and again, the tears welled up in his eyes. I felt a person’s warmth and kindness.

I wanted to stay here with my host family ever after.

After three years , now we are still good family. We are not real family, but I think we are family.

That caused me to decide to be a mediator between Japan and New Zealand. The day changed my life. I didn’t like English before that. But now, I am in the department of English and American literature at our university.

I do like English, so I am deeply grateful to my host family for changing my life. I want to study English more and become an English speaker like a native speaker. That is my dream.

So it is the day that I cannot forget.

Tobacco tax should be incresed in Japan

In this world, many adults smoke cigarettes to relax and make themselves look cool. According to the website, Searchina, about one billion men and about 2 hundred million women smoke cigarettes in the whole world now. (1) Almost all smokers would begin to smoke because of having curiosity at first, and many smokers can’t stop smoking even if they want to quit. It is very difficult for smokers to quit smoking because the nicotine is addictive. In Japan, the government is planning to increase tobacco tax. Ex-prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama said that tobacco tax should be increased to 1000yen at a stroke. There are three merits to raising tax on cigarettes: to decrease the number of smokers, to prevent the damage of passive smoking, and to reduce the number of minors who smoke cigarettes.

The first reason why tobacco tax should be increased is that it can stop increasing the number of smokers. Someone who intends to smoke cigarette from now will stop buying a cigarette because the price of cigarette is very important for smokers in such a depression. Each pack of tobacco costs 320 on the average now. According to a poll on the website, mycom journal, 28, 5% of smokers will stop smoking if tobacco tax increases more than 1000 to 1999yen, and the average price which can make smokers stop smoking cigarettes is 927, 6yen in this poll. (2) Most smokers will begin to quit smoking, but some people who are depending on tobacco will not quit smoking no matter how much it costs. Even if those who people keep buying cigarettes, tobacco tax should be increased because the number of smoker is sure to be decreased in the future.

The second reason is to decrease the damage of passive smoking. The Cancer Information Service states that passive smoking causes various diseases and early death to both adults and children who don’t smoke at all. Lung cancer is related to passive smoking. The possibility people live around smokers will suffer from lung cancer by passive smoking is larger 20 to 30% than people who lived with only non -smokers. (1) There is another problem of passive smoking. It is the influence on unborn babies, infants, and small children. Generally speaking, pregnant women should not smoke cigarettes because of causing serious diseases to their unborn babies. According to The Latest Information of Tobacco, decrease of birth weight and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) due to passive smoking by pregnant women, and not only unborn babies, but also five-ten years old childrens whose parents are smokers may be taken risks of suffering from pneumonia, respiratory disease, otitis media, and something bad diseases. (1) Then, passive smoking gives bad influences for example, lung cancer, asthma, decline of lung function, on both smokers own self and around the people may be family or boyfriends or related to them. If tobacco tax is increased drastically, many smokers will quit smoking.

The third reason is to stop smoking by minors. In Universities in Japan, many smoking places are set everywhere. Some of them who smoking at there are not adults but they smoke cigarettes as if nothing is bad. Ninemns states two-year-old Aldi who lives in a fishing village on the island of Sumatra casually smoking cigarettes for the cameras shocked people around the world as it circulated on the internet. His parents claimed their child was “healthy” despite providing him with about 40 cigarettes a day. (1) Of course, in Japan, many young people under twenty years old smoke cigarettes every day. According to a website, No- Tobacco Life, the percentage of smokers who are high school students in Japan is as follow; boy is 8.5%, and girl is 3.1%. In short, three boys and a girl of high school classmates smoke every day. (2) It easy for junior or high school students to buy cigarettes by them self. Therefore, Japanese government won’t be able to break through this serious situation. If tobacco tax is increased, minors will not be able to buy cigarettes because they don’t have enough money to purchase cigarettes. According to a research by Oricon, junior or high school students are given 5376 yen per a child on the average for pocket money. (1) If the price of cigarette is increased to 1000yen, they will lose one-fifth of their allowance at one go. Therefore they will not want to buy cigarettes anymore and minors who begin to smoke will quit buying cigarettes.

In conclusion, increased tobacco tax has three merits. One merit is to stop increasing the number of smokers. Another merit is to eliminate the passive smoking problem, and the other merit is to decrease the number of minor smokers. Cigarettes are like narcotics and it is difficult to quit smoking and a lot of patience and endeavor is needed. People who want to keep smoking even if they will die because of smoking surely have freedom to keep buying cigarettes, that’ why increased tobacco tax is better way for heavier smokers than abolishing tobacco entirely. The more higher it costs, the more number of people intend to quit smoking. So, tobacco tax should be increased in Japan.

How To Survive Valentine’s Day Alone

I watched a short movie.

SUMMARY

The short movie tells me how to survive Valentine’s Day alone. It introduces 7 steps. First step is “Realize you are not alone”. That means we had better think millions of others don’t have a date for Valentine’s Day. Second Step is “Remember: it’s commercial”. Tell yourself that Valentine’s Day is a crass commercial holiday that mostly brings happiness to florist and candy makers. Third step is “Do something decadent”. On Valentine’s Day, you should book something decadent that you’ve always wanted to do. Fourth step is “Think of people in rotten relationships”. Think of all people who were in a rotten relationship just to get a heart-shaped box of cheap chocolates. Fifth step is “Feel superior”. Feel superior to those people who are dating. Sixth step is “Consider the holiday’s origin”. Valentine, a 3rd-century priest, who wrote a love letter to the warden’s daughter, therefore being someone’s Valentine is really being a doomed, lovesick prisoner. Seventh step is “Enjoy half-priced chocolates”. On February 15, we should purchase a now half-priced box of chocolates. We give the same warm and fuzzy feelings we have when we’re falling in love without any of the heartache by phenyl ethylamine which is contained in chocolates.

Chizuru Hayasaka

Author: Lewis Carroll

Book title: Alice In Wonderland

Publisher: Macmillan

Place: England

Date: 26 November 1865

*Summary*

One summer day Alice is sitting on the riverbank with her sister when a big white rabbit runs past. "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late," the rabbit says, taking a look at his watch. Then he pops down a large rabbit hole, and Alice just has to follow him. Arriving at the bottom of the hole, found small doors all around the hall, but they were all locked. She picked up a tiny golden key on a little three-legged table. The key fitted to the lock of one of the small doors. Alice was very happy but she became noticed that the door was too small for her to go out. Alice was confused but she found a little bottle on it, and tied round the neck of the bottle was a paper label with the words "DRINK ME" beautifully printed on it in large letters. Alice tried to drink it and suddenly her body was shrinking! She was now the right size for going through the little door into the lovely garden. She noticed she left the key of the door on the table she could not reach anymore. A cake with "EAT

ME" on it causes her to grow to such a tremendous size her head hits the ceiling.

Alice was unhappy and cried and her tears flood the halfway because of eating the cake. After shrinking down again due to a fan she had picked up, Alice swam through a pond made of her own tears and met a Mouse, who was swimming as well. She tries to make small talk with him but all she could think of talking about is her cat, which offends the mouse.

The sea of tears became crowded with other animals and birds to convene on the bank and the question among them was how to get dry again. After the conference, the white rabbit appeared again in search of the Duchess’s gloves and fan. The white rabbit ordered her to go into the house and brink them to him. She went in and found a cake and thought it would make her body shrink. Therefore Alice ate it and reduced her again in size.

Alice came on a mushroom and sitting on it is a blue Caterpillar smoking a hookah. Caterpillar advised Alice to eat which of sides on mushroom he was sitting. With some effort, Alice brought herself back to her usual height. Alice became a guest at a “mad” tea party along with the Hatter, the March Hare, and a sleeping Dormouse who remained asleep for most of the tea party. Alice was so tired of the stupid tea party and left and entered the garden where Alice came on three living playing cards painting the white roses on a rose tree because the Queen of Hearts didn’t like white roses very much. The Queen and King went to her and invited Alice to play a game of croquet. Of course, the game descended into chaos because of the Queen’s familiar phrase “OFF WITH HIS HEAD!” The grinning Cheshire Cat appeared on the tree front of Alice, and said “How are you getting on?” As soon as he appeared, the King came to Alice and took small talk with him but the cat was so offensive and made the king angry. The King ordered executioner to cut off Cheshire cat’s head. But his head is all that can be seen of him so executioner couldn’t do that. After the game, Alice attended a trial whereby the Knave of Hearts is accused of stealing the Queen’s tart. During the jury, Alice found that she was steadily growing larger. Alice was called up as a witness. Her height was too big for the court. The King and Queen ordered Alice to be gone following Rues 42, but Alice disputed their judgment and refused to leave. And then, the Queen shouted “Off with her head.” Alice didn’t be afraid of it and calling them out as just a pack of cards. Alice ran away from the solders of card and waked up from her long long dream.

Character

The main character is Alice who is seven and a half years old. She is very curious and imaginative girl, and she follows a white rabbit and wandered into the wonderland. The White Rabbit is always shouts “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!” He has a clock in his hand and run in a hurry. The White Rabbit is written as a herald-like servant of the King and Queen of Hearts. Cheshire Cat always appears in front of Alice with grinning, and helps her make decision. Anyway, he is a good friend for Alice. The Queen of Heats is short-tempered woman and her familiar phrase is “Off with his head!” She shouts every time something gets on her nerves. She invites Alice to play a game of croquet. In this game, she orders an executioner to cut off many animals and people’s head.

Point of View

“Alice in Wonderland” is written from third person. This book contains of many conversation, therefore we can read this pleasantly. Although readers can empathize with the hero of the story, the conversation is difficult to understand because of its hard dulls. It is difficult for me to understand what the writer wants to say.

Conflict

There is a big conflict in this story, and it is an escape from the real world. Alice wandered into a wonderland because she was bored sitting on the riverbank with her sister. Alice was very curious girl and eager to something like interesting thing and thrill, so she made an imaginary world in her head and felt as if she went into the world.

Irony

Alice experienced many strange occurrences in the wonderland she made. In this world, there are animals and peculiar creatures which can talk like a human. Readers may be deceived as if Alice is actually in the wonderland and it is not Alice’s imaginary world. The writer make readers believe in that Alice gets lost in a strange world; however the wonderland is just her dream and she makes it in her head. This is an irony.

Symbol

A lot of symbols exist in this story, but now I introduced a big symbol. It is ‘red’. Red symbolized red roses, bloods, passion, love, and the queen of Hearts. Queen of Hearts likes red roses, and cutting with her hated people. Because she is starved for love and she believes in that everything and everyone follow as she says. She shouts “Off with his head” again and again when someone doesn’t follow her order. When executioner cut off with someone’s head, his bloods can be seen. As I said, ‘red’ symbolized the queen of Hearts.

Theme

The theme of this story is ‘mad’. A deck of cards comes to life, all the animals talk, and everything gets curiouser and curiouser. All things the residents in the wonderland say is very mad. The writer imagined something never happen in the real world can cause in the wonderland. In the 19th century the writer made this story, Britain caused wars against China and India. The writer would think the British government were mad, and expressed this feeling trough the story.
